Swallow Wooden Greenhouses

Swallow Greenhouses are manufactured in the north of England near Rotherham by skilled craftsmen who love the products they make. There is no question that a wooden greenhouse has a certain natural charm that aluminium greenhouses simply don’t. They tend to merge into the garden beautifully and look great in traditional flower gardens or very modern minimalist gardens, quality and style always shines through.
I’ve personally owned a number of wooden greenhouses in the past and found the timber quality to wanting as well as the fit and finish being unsatisfactory and certainly not made with longevity in mind. Swallow greenhouses though, I find, are the exception. These greenhouses are built to last without a shadow of a doubt.
Swallow greenhouses are made from tanalised redwood pine that is specifically sourced for it’s weather resistant qualities and is perfect for the delightful British weather !

Swallow Kingfisher Greenhouse

This greenhouse is the Kingfisher. It’s a 6ft wide timber greenhouse and Swallow’s best selling greenhouse by a distance. This is purely down to the fact that 6ft wide is the most practical size for most gardens as it’s easy to fit in. The Kingfisher has a whole host of neat features, such as:

Swallow also produce an 8ft wide greenhouse called the Swallow Raven. It has double doors and all of the standard features you’ll find on Swallow green houses (as above) such as toughened safety glass and automatic roof vents. The beauty of an 8ft wide greenhouse is the extra space inside, it gives you much more “working space” and room for more plants in tubs, pots, raised beds or grow bags. Swallow Raven Greenhouse

The Raven Greenhouse model is one of my favourite greenhouses, it’s great to look at and very practical as well. I love the look of the greenhouse but the size is the best thing. I’d be wanting an 8ft x 12ft and they come in at £2400, but that price includes installation so it’s pretty good really.

Swallow Falcon Greenhouse

This is the largest Swallow timber model at 13ft wide. It’s great for those of us with big gardens and even garden centres and nurseries.

Of course, with a greenhouse of this size your options are greatly expanded in terms of what you can grow. For instance in this case with a 13ft wide greenhouse you’d be able to grow down both sides as well as down the centre of the greenhouse. This greenhouse would actually be ideal for schools or educational use where you’d need to have a number of people inside with space to work and learn.

As you can see the Swallow Dove Lean to above has a custom “Lily White” paint job. Swallow paint the greenhouses in their factory spray booth in order to give the best paint finish possible rather than hand paint their greenhouses. The Dove features full toughened safety glass, slatted staging and locking door.

Here is a photo of a freshly fitted 4ft x 8ft Swallow Finch lean-to sitting against the side of a bungalow. In this photo you can clearly make out the black PVC Damp Barrier going around the foot of the greenhouse that prevents the timber from becoming damp, making your new greenhouse last a lifetime !

Lean to greenhouses are a great way to fit a greenhouse into a tight space against a house or garage or even on a balcony if you live in an apartment. Lean to greenhouses are also used as sunrooms and can simply become additional living space when attached to the house. A very warm and sunny bit of living space for you as well as your plants !

Small Lean to Greenhouses

Even if space is tight there are some cracking little lean to greenhouses out there to get you growing. One of our favorites is the Vitavia  Ida 900 small lean to in 2ft x 4ft size. This little lean-to comes in silver or a nice deep green colour. You get a single sliding door and an opening roof vent to keep the greenhouse cool in hot weather and a choice of standard greenhouse glass or toughened safety glass glazing. You can place the greenhouse on a timber frame base or better than that Vitavia offer a galvanized steel base tailor made for the Ida 900 which gives great rigidity and strength.

Vitavia offer this lean to in 2ft x 6ft also. The Vitavia 1300 lean to greenhouse gives a bit more width and almost doubles the growing space over the smaller Ida 900 as it has a central sliding door giving clearly defined growing space on either side.

Brand new for 2013 Vitavia have introduced some larger Ida Lean-to’s that are 6ft Wide (Deep) for those of us with a bit more space. These new Ida’s have double sliding doors at the front that can be separated into two single doors to place on either end of the greenhouse if that’s better for you. You get standard horticultural glass sides and a 4mm polycarbonate roof for safety and plant protection.  The new Ida lean to is available in 6×8, 6×10 and 6×12 and is shipping now at Greenhouse Stores.

Halls Silverline Curved Eaves Lean to

This is a slightly unusual, but non the less attractive greenhouse from Halls. The eaves section at the front of the greenhouse is nicely curved. This is done by using clear acyrlic glazing rather than glass as it’s tough, flexible and UV resistant so it won’t discolour over time. The Silverline Lean-to is available as a 6×8, a 6×10 and a 6ft x 12ft model in silver or green powder coated finishes.

Large Lean-to Greenhouses

If you have the space then a larger lean to greenhouse can offer you the opportunity to have a nice warm extension to your house for growing your plants and can also be used as a place to relax, like a sun room or conservatory !
